Welcome to The Achievement Blog! This is a place for unflagging encouragement in all things. By that I mean here is a place where I'll be celebrating the desire to use personal achievements as metaphors to build confidence and get over the insidious psychological hurdles that can keep us from being where we want to be in our lives.
I'll be celebrating my own lunacy and those of friends and members of this community. And I can't wait to share many
of the things I've learned. For the record, I'm about to make
the Clubhouse turn to the Back Nine (that's just shy of 50
for you non-golfers) and I have so many things to do before
I face down my 18th fairway! I make lists and I try things—
some I continue and some I do not. Sometimes a smidgen
of progress in a miserable failure feels like a mile and is worth
the effort. Sometimes incremental growth where I'm already competent doesn't seem like a big-enough deal to merit acknowledgement. Sometimes the smartest concession to
trying new things at middle-age is wearing lots of body armor.
Why do I want to blog about this? Because when we grow up,
we learn all about limitations. There are so many forces in
the world that tell us what we can't do and why we can't do
it. Sometimes their motives are sweet—friends and family
don't want to see us get hurt. Sometimes their motives are disingenuous—people are jealous, paranoid or change-resistant. Just the other day I coached a salesperson who said, "You make it sound so easy and exciting." I responded, "There are plenty of obstacles out there that will bring you down. My job is to get you energized and revved up to face them." |

The Mentoring Forum is a Bulletin Board for all people who want to achieve (but especially those women on the Back Nine who still contemplate world domination on Tuesdays and Thursdays!) Numerous studies clearly indicate that those who succeed in their careers and endeavors are helped along by mentors, sponsors and coaches. “But where do I find a mentor?” people ask me. The answer is anywhere you see someone who is already doing what you think you might like to do or try.
|
| Being a mentor is a satisfying experience: the accomplishment of bootstrapping another deserving person to get them to where they want or need to go. Becoming a successful mentee is also a satisfying experience, one that teaches people to pay-it-forward and become a mentor to many others throughout their lives. |
| Whether the accomplishment is choosing a career path or learning to bake, we all have gifts to share and the ability to learn. The first question a mentor will help you to understand is: “How badly do you want it?” Mentoring is a great way to experiment with an idea to find out if it’s worth pursuing with vigor. |
| There are courtesy rules to being a mentor and mentee, of course. Please abide by them as each person who participates is doing so as a labor of love. (There’s a separate area for blatant self-promotion where you can have at it!) And if you like the forum and want to help grow our community, please invite a friend to join. The first benefit of mentorship is passing it on! |
